A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH £600,000 IN THE BANK

Strange news today with nearly £600,000 compensation being awarded to Bernard Matthews for healthy birds slaughtered in the bird flu outbreak. The payment, with the money coming from Government coffers, is provided under the Animal Health Act 1981 which encourages early reporting of bird flu to minimise the spread of the disease.

Whilst I feel sorry for his turkeys, I don’t feel sorry for Mr Matthews. Not only did he mislead the public (he labels his products as being British when in fact they have come from the eastern block but resided in the UK for two weeks) but he has made millions of pounds to the determent of the nations health. Not only that, but Mr Matthews is in business, and as such he should insure himself against the risk of anything going wrong, including bird flu. The tax payer should not have to cover any losses incurred through being involved in an industry which has potential dangers. Will the government be applying the same principal to pension funds? I suspect not.

Sorry Bernard, but it’s “Rogues Gallery” for you!
