SAME OLD SAME OLD

Whether Gordon Brown will be in the House of Commons today to see his namesake Des (with an e) fight for his short but interesting ministerial life will depend on if he isn’t too tired from his American trip. Like Browne, Brown has been missing this weekend but unlike Browne, we knew where Brown was. The BBC said of that his “impromptu” meeting with the American President was;

"Strongest sign yet" of preparations being made on both sides of the Atlantic for the prospect of Mr Brown representing the UK on the international stage as prime minister. Our correspondent said the impromptu sit-down also showed that Gordon Brown knows which relationship is most important for British foreign policy.

Brown’s actions are those of a man compelled by arrogance to place himself on the world stage before he has actually been confirmed as the new P.M. For this alone I hope a credible challenger can be found from within the Labour cohort who currently sit in the Commons. It galls me that the Americans have already arrived at a conclusion before a vote has been taken. Is Brown their preference, or is their judgement based on an acceptance that he is the natural usurper of the throne?

(My over usage of the “Brown(e)” reference in the first paragraph is deliberate; I suspect that this was the colour of Gordon’s nose when he emerged from his meeting with Bush!)
