After several years of following the same regime, I have decided that waking up to Radio 5 is no longer good for the soul. I can cope with the mindless ranting and asinine questioning technique of Nicky Campbell, BBC’s real life version of Alan Partridge, but after this mornings sound bites I was actually questioning the will to live.
Here’s a short list of world events as of today:
NORTH KOREA NUCLEAR DEADLINE APPROACHES
SUICIDE CAR BOMB ATTACK IN IRAQ
POTENTIAL POLITICAL COUP IN RUSSIA
As I am sure you would agree these issues are of great importance. What then were the world threatening headlines that purged my ears this early morning; that Prince William and his girl friend Kate Middleton have had a spat and decided to go their separate ways. I could actually tolerate this being mentioned as a news item way down the list but oh no, Radio 5 has gone into “royal bust up” mode! Every single hack that has ever used the word “royal” in an article has been dragged from his or her Saturday morning pit and asked to pontificate on the matter. At one point, the BBC devoted 25 continuous minutes to the subject, and 2 to the fact that bodies were still missing in the North Sea oil rig tragedy.
There is an ironic twist to this story and in some ways this is the point of this tirade. Several correspondences have homed in on the fact that it was largely due to media intrusion that led to William’s parents divorcing and more importantly, to his mother’s death. Yet here they all are devoting swathes of column inches and air time to something which happens to us all at some time.
Personally, William’s private life does nor concern me one jot, I leave that to the readers of Hello and Heat. However, I do have great sympathy for him; he is a young man who lost his mother in a tragic but very public (fuelled) way. To have his own private life plastered over the newspapers etc must be a stark reminder of a troubled past.
