Defence Secretary Des Browne has taken a severe verbal thrashing at the hands of both the media and the public today. Whilst many have actually congratulated him for stating that “the buck stops here”, the majority of people have been able to see through this smoke screen and whilst not demanding his head on a block, have actually realized that this whole sorry charade is another example of Labour’s need to manipulate the media. Sadly, like many of the combat rifles supplied to our troops, it has back fired. What Browne should have said is that “the buck stops at the bank, especially if you’re serving military personnel and have a story to tell”.
Personally, I’m not in favour of Browne being sacked for two reasons. Firstly, I can’t actually think there is anybody behind the scenes with the actual ability to do the job any better. Secondly, for Blair to claim that he didn’t have any knowledge of the decision means that he severely had his eye of the ball and if any body should go, it should be the PM for gross negligence. However, since he’s going anyway, he probably thinks "what’s the point!"
On a more local note, a decision re the new Tyne crossing is imminent. If your one of the unlucky commuters who have to sit in a 30 minute traffic jam approaching the existing Tyne Tunnel then you will probably be quite happy to see a new link. However, if you are able to understand the bigger picture, then you won’t want to see any new development.
My concern is that for some reason certain organisations, institutions and councils etc seem hell bent on pushing this through. Why?

Peter, thanks for the email. Unfortunately, your email is bouncing back (I think you might have entered the wrong address into your email program?). However, thanks for the link. You've been added to my blogroll. There aren't enough of us bloggers up here in the north, so the best of luck. ;o)
