KERCHINGGG!!!

Radio Newcastle’s morning news bulletin carried an interview with Faye Turney, the naval hostage who became the face of the Iranian crisis. Her defence for selling her story was based on the fact that she wanted her tale told and that although she took a payment, she did not sell to the highest bidder. She also intended to give a “percentage” to a naval fund which was associated with a Royal Navy ship. To be honest, this is one of the lamest set of excuses I have ever heard to describe the pure greed of opportunism.

Let’s comment on this issue and lay it to rest once and for all:

1. The story could have been told for FREE. There isn’t a paper in publication that wouldn’t have covered it.

2. If any paper was prepared to pay money, then ALL the proceeds should go to charities associated with bereaved military relatives.

3. You are serving naval personnel, and as such must expect to face DIFFICULT situations. These should not be used to make financial gain.

Nobody can deny that these hostages faced an emotional and psychological hell, but Faye Turney and her colleagues came home from Iraq, hundreds haven’t: that is the stark fact. Perhaps she should remind herself of this before she checks her bank balance.
