I have no doubt that Tony Blair loves his wife, but I suspect that over the next few weeks he is going to be even more happy to have her by his side. If the Sunday Telegraph is right in it’s prediction, Blair may find himself in need of a good brief! Finally the “cash for honours” inquiry is coming to a head, and it appears that a head (on the chopping block) is what the CPS is after.
The usual inside sources have indicated that Blair is to be called as a witness for the prosecution. If true, this would give him the unenviable glory of being the only serving or retired PM to be interviewed by the police and appear in court as a result of a criminal investigation (chalk another first up to Tony).
However, the whole case is starting to take on a slightly murky look and I detect some lawyer shinnying at play here. If Blair appears as a witness for the defence, Levy and Turner can claim they were acting on “instructions” from above; if he appears for the prosecution they can’t claim this and Blair will have effectively said “not me mate” and left old Bonny and Clyde to the mercy of the judge and jury. So whilst being hauled into the dock to be questioned will be an embarrassment, it will be less of a one as a CPS snitch than a defence fall guy.
Either way, it’s going to be very interesting!
