I suspect that all may not be well at South Tyneside Council this morning. Guilty of trying to bury bad news on the day Tony Blair resigned, the Council sneaked out a press release yesterday which played down the fact that South Tyneside Homes had only being warded one star by the Audit Commission. Whilst Gladys Hobson, Chair of South Tyneside Homes try’s to play down this pathetic rating with claims of “promising prospects” for the future, she fails to realize that her colleagues probably sealed her employment fate some time ago. I attended a local CAF meeting in February 2007 where a one of her co-workers presented a rather detailed and no doubt expensive Power Point presentation as to how South Tyneside Homes was going to go from strength to strength over the next few years, providing the community with “decent homes.” However, the essential provision for this whole programme was the achievement of an Audit Grade Two so that a grant of £167 million could be obtained. One rather astute member of the public however, had the audacity to stand up and ask “what will happen if you don’t get a Grade Two?” If looks could kill, this person would be ten foot under! The reply was adamant; it was ridiculous to think they wouldn’t get a Grade 2. This “Decent Homes” road show went on a full CAF tour, so all wards were given the same party line.
