Over on “Rossinisbird.blogspot.com” all is not tranquil. A man of few posts, Rossinisbird writes about once a week but with a fury to cover at least 14 days, and his words of 4th May are no exception (I wish he would blog more often).
Essentially a tirade against Miliband and his “lip sync” to the carbon reduction movement, the Bird can’t resist having a dig at the (Catholic) church, and why not.
Taking the government first, Rossinisbird does a pretty good Mike Yarwood’esk impression of Mr Miliband “let's talk about how terrible climate change is, but never actually do anything about it that may upset our chums.” In some ways Miliband has shot himself in the foot here; why go all the way to the Vatican to talk about climate change when in reality the CBI, G8, China and the United States might have been a better road to salvation.
When it comes to the church, he is equally resolute, comparing “absolution” with “(carbon) offsetting”, following it up with a classic Shakespearean phrase, its “complete bollocks”. Whilst the former may be viewed as a quick way to heaven, the latter oppositely is on paper a way of delaying it. However, where Rossinisbird is on the mark, is that both are a smoke screen to basically do what you want. The commercial intent of both the individual and the corporate may try to disguise themselves as caring and sympathetic, but in the eyes of the (green) beholder, they are neither.
Where Rossinisbird really drives a stake into the heart of the church hierarchy is with the comment;
“If Pope Benedict wants to reduce the Catholic Church's carbon footprint then a good start would be to look at the human footprint. He could kick in the Church's support for family planning, including contraception, straight away. Less people on the planet means a bigger share of the planet's resources for everyone.”
That sharp intake of breath you just heard was every Diocese in Jarrow gasping for a swig of the Holy Commune wine! Yet here’s the truth, it’s the sheer number of people on the planet and the demands which they make which is the cause of climate change; reduce or control these numbers and you do like wise with climate change.
I feel sorry for the Pope in this instance, Miliband may have equally have visited the Archbishop of Canterbury or any head of an organised religion; all are equally complaisant in doing nothing to challenge the problems which face the world. It seems strange doesn’t it that all organised religion claims with their own individual bibles to have the blue print to save the world, yet to date none have managed it.
Never mind, there’s always Armageddon to wipe the slate clean!
