Let’s set the record straight, from now on Labour doesn’t “bury bad news” on days when something else dominates the headlines. No, from now on, they wait till the dust is just about to settle to before smuggling out their latest tirade. Rather than announce the closure of 2500 Post Offices up and down the country before the local and Scottish elections, they waited till votes had been cast so that the public could not vent their anger.
Today’s Telegraph at least has the guts to break the news, whilst Alistair Darling, Trade and Industry Minister, will makes us all wait till next for the news. Whilst Gordon Brown tours the country promising a new approach to politics which will include his novel and radical idea of “listening to people”, the unfortunately named Darling has just sounded the death knell for many local communities. To make matters worse, most of the closures will be in England, with only a handful in Scotland. The ways things are going, it looks like its north of the border for me, at least when it comes to posting a letter or buying a stamp.
And what of the man who is ultimately responsible for this culling of Post Offices? Put it this way, Alistair Darling is going to be your new Chancellor when Brown takes over the top job. Not only is he another Scot at the top end of the ladder of power, but he also sits in a constituency who we in England can’t vote for, Edinburgh South West. So there you have it, the two top people in English politics can’t be unseated by the people they govern
Forget Scotland, even Zimbabwe looks like a better democratic option.
